The model of instruction for the STREAM Machine program includes the PBS Ready to Learn learning triangle where students view an educational program, do an activity, and read together. When the learning triangle is used, one educational objective is presented in three ways (View, Read, and Do), to address various learning styles and engage different senses.
In June, students from various parts of the community participated in an engaging lesson about the solar system. Students learned what makes a planet a planet and according to our friends at PBS KIDS Ready Jet Go, three main things make a planet a planet:
- The planet must orbit around the sun.
- It must have enough stuff (mass) for its gravity to shape it into a ball.
- It must be able to clear the neighborhood.
What does it mean to “clear the neighborhood”? The planet must have enough gravity to push or fling objects in its area. Did you know Pluto is not considered a planet? Unlike the other planets, Pluto cannot clear the neighborhood!
At the end of the lesson, students received a STREAM Kit. They thought the kits were out of this world! (No pun intended.) There are so many fun things to learn about the solar system. Learn with PBS KIDS Ready Jet Go! at https://pbskids.org/videos/ready-jet-go.
