The October theme for the STREAM Machine is nature and autumn landscapes. This month's STREAM kit includes a bird-shaped cookie cutter. Here are five ways your family can have fun with a cookie cutter:
- Make and decorate sugar cookies. And you don’t have to stop with cookies—use cookie cutters to make edible food art of all kinds (think: sandwiches, shaped mashed potato piles, etc.)!
Owl Shaped Sugar Cookies - Use cookie cutters as stencils and create beautiful works of art.
- Make salt dough decorations using this recipe from PBS KIDS: Make Leaf-Imprinted Ornaments | Crafts for Kids | PBS KIDS for ParentsPBS for Parents/PBS
Leaf Imprinted Ornaments Use with playdough or clay. Try this recipe for homemade playdough:
Mix 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, and ¼ cup of salt together in a bowl. Add food coloring if desired. Add ¼ to ½ cup of water slowly as you mix until your dough is the consistency you like. If you add too much water, add more flour. Store in a sealed container.
- If you have several cookie cutters, use them to practice sorting. How many different categories can you come up with?
