WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973, and on February 14th of that year – in a Saint Valentines Day stunt – scuba divers from the Erie Skin-Divers Club reported to the Erie Times-News that they had netted and released a mermaid in Presque Isle Bay. Their photographic evidence was inconclusive, as it was too dark and blurry.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles on WQLN PBS.
