WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On October 12th of that year, a loud noise was widely reported by residents from Erie to Dunkirk, New York. According to the US Coast Guard, the mysterious “bang” was significantly louder than a jet plane breaking the sound barrier – it shook buildings and rattled windows.
This Day in History is presented by the Emmy-nominated history series Chronicles. The new season begins Thursday October 26 on WQLN PBS and on our TV app - Passport.
