American Experience: Zora Neale Hurston | Tuesday, January 17 at 9pm
Best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston was a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Even as a renowned writer, she pursued anthropological studies, becoming Barnard College’s first Black female graduate. She struggled for recognition in two professional worlds, writing novels and collecting folklore, drawing on her scholarship to inform her artistry. This new biography looks at her trailblazing work and how she would honor and celebrate Black life on its own terms — an idea that remains radical today.
