WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On September 11th of that year, Erie County Coroner Merle Wood said that 15% of all of Erie County’s traffic fatalities occurred on Interstate 90. Wood predicted the number would double or triple by year’s end if repairs were not immediately made.

This Day in History is presented by the Emmy-nominated history series Chronicles. The new season begins next month and is available online at WQLN.org and on the PBS app - Passport.
