WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On July 9th of that year, Erie County welfare recipients were permitted bank loans to cover living expenses which were lost due to the state’s budget crisis. The crisis was caused by the state’s inability to pass a budget.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles, nominated for seven Emmy awards, and available online at WQLN.org and on the PBS app Passport.
