WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On June 5th of that year, and in a stunt to get attention from his girlfriend, nineteen-year-old George Ortiz pretended to have been run over by a car on Lake Shore Drive in Dunkirk. A large crowd gathered, along with multiple emergency vehicles. Ortiz was charged with creating a public nuisance.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles, nominated for seven Emmy awards, and available online at WQLN.org and on the PBS app Passport.
