WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On June 2nd of that year, and through a press release, Erie County Prison announced that prisoners are now permitted to wear neatly trimmed beards. This followed the controversial decision to place three prisoners in solitary confinement for not shaving.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles, nominated for seven Emmy awards, and available online at WQLN.org and on the PBS app Passport.
