WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973. On May 28th of that year, Erie lost its rank as the 110th largest US City when it was surpassed by Raleigh, North Carolina, Huntington Beach, California, and Amarillo, Texas. Erie remained Pennsylvania’s third-largest city for another twenty-two years.
