WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973, and on March 19th of that year – 18-year-old Greg Spilko paddled an experimental canoe from Waterford to Franklin. Spilko’s father designed the unflippable craft for the US Coast Guard. The trip took 31 and a half hours.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles, which is available online at WQLN.org and on PBS Passport.
