WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973, and on March 18th of that year – it took 20 Perry Hi-Way Hose Volunteer firefighters to remove 11-year-old Tommy Fletcher from a quicksand-like mire near Walnut Creek in Summit Township. Fletcher was treated for exposure and sent home.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles, which is available online at WQLN.org and on PBS Passport.
