WQLN NPR first signed on the air in 1973, and on February 9th of that year – the 614-foot lake freighter The SS Leon Fraser arrived at Presque Isle Bay. To date, this was the latest winter arrival in Port Erie’s history, making 1972-1973 the most extended shipping season on the great lakes.

This Day in History is presented by Chronicles on WQLN PBS.
