The Film: Interview Transcripts: Charles Blockson

Charles Blockson, historian on
slave revolts

When I was growing up I always loved history, whether it was ancient history or local history. Our textbooks in those days said that all the slaves were happy on the plantations. But I said to myself as I started to get into it, if the enslaved people were happy, why did they run away?  Why did they plan revolts? There were over 500 revolts throughout the United States at the time.  The Underground Railroad became a safety valve. If it hadn’t occurred, there would have even been more revolts.
