The Film: Interview Transcripts: Charles Blockson

Charles Blockson, historian on
preserving Underground Railroad sites

It’s imperative that we preserve the former sites connected with the Underground Railroad.  That we reinterpret the Underground Railroad to include all people of all races, so that we can walk upon this American earth in sisterhood and brotherhood.  To me, that is what symbolized the Underground Railroad.  From all my writing and reading, that people of all races should be able to sit down and break bread together and to realize the contribution of all people.  You know, this is America, and America was founded primarily by various people from various groups around the world.  We must work together, or else we will perish together.
