John Brown’s Famous Raid on Harper’s Ferry

In October 1859, John Brown and a band of men descended upon the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, hoping to seize 100,000 rifles and muskets and ignite a slave revolt.  Their plan was thwarted when the local militia and a group of marines led by Robert E. Lee captured or killed nearly all of the raiders.

John Brown’s controversial trial prompted newspaper editorials across the country.  Some said he was a cold blooded killer; others believed he was an avenging angel.

John Brown was hanged for treason in 1859, 16 months before the Civil War.
