Today, June 1st, is Oscar the Grouch's birthday. To help him celebrate let's make some "Grouch Cakes."

Grouch Cakes

Materials:
  • Box of cake mix
  • Muffin Tins
  • Can of vanilla frosting
  • Green food coloring
  • Marshmallows
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Tube of chocolate decorating icing

Instructions:
  1. Mix cake batter according to package directions, allowing your child to help with the mixing, measuring, and pouring.
  2. Let your child place a foil liner in each cup of a muffin tin. (Encourage him to count as he goes along!)
  3. Spoon batter into lined cups. Bake and cool according to the package directions.
  4. Have your child squeeze several drops of green food coloring into the icing, and mix. (You can do the mixing right in the can—there's no need to dirty an extra bowl.)
  5. Top the cupcakes with the green icing.
  6. To make Oscar's face: First, cut a marshmallow in half into two circles. These will be Oscar's eyeballs. Then, stick a chocolate chip, point side down, into each marshmallow for pupils.
  7. Place the eyes close together on top of the cupcake. Draw thick eyebrows and a mouth on with the tube of chocolate.
