Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening PA Academic Standards - 1.6.3 A & D
After watching the Outdoor Family Adventures Adaptive Sports episode, you may want to learn more about the athletes that participate in the adaptive sports. A personal way to learn more about others is by asking them questions or by conducting and interview. By using your listening and speaking skills, you will be able to better understand athletes with disabilities. Ask an adult to assist you with making the arrangements to meet or to talk over the telephone. Write down the interview questions before you meet. Remember to take notes during the interview. Always follow up an interview with a thank you note.
People to interview:
- Athletes with a disability
- Coaches of athletes with disabilities
- Administrators of sports programs affiliated with disability sports programs
Suggested questions: (Be sure to add several of your own)
- What do you feel are the most important issues with disabled athletes?
- How would you improve disability sports?
- Is there any sport you would like to see offered to disabled athletes?
Now, share your interview notes with your teacher. Look for opportunities to share the information you learned with others. You may be able to place an article in the school or local newspaper.
Health, Safety and Physical Education PA Academic Standards - 10.4.3 A
If you are an able-bodied person have you ever stopped to think of the challenges that dis- abled persons face? Mobility (that means being able to move around), sight, and hearing are things that most people take for granted every day. To gain an appreciation for your body, gather some friends and attempt some of the sports you usually play with the following adaptations.
- Play soccer, baseball, bowling, flag football, golf or table tennis blindfolded or with earplugs.
- Play basketball, archery, fencing, tennis or ice hockey while sitting in a wheel chair or stationary chair.
Was it difficult to play the sport? Which change was the most challenging-loss of mobility, sight or hearing?
Now select an "able-bodied" sport and discuss with your friends the modifications to the rules, equipment, and playing area that would allow successful participation by athletes with disabilities.
Civics and Government PA Academic Standards - 5.2.3 A
