History PA Academic Standards - 8.1.3 A
Compared to many sports, paintball has a rather short history. For example, skiing has been around for thousands of years and paintball was invented less than 30 years ago! See if you can place the events that lead up to the creation of the game in chronological order (that means in the correct order from beginning to end.)
The History of Paintball

To an outsider, the sport of paintball may not appear to be an activity that requires the players to be physically fit. However, paintball can be a very physically and mentally challenging sport. Because the sport can be so demanding, it is recommended that players always stretch out their upper and lower body before a paintball match. For the most serious paintball player, Stewart Smith's Paintball workout is available on the Internet at www.GetFitNow.com. Using an on-line computer, visit the web site and try the fitness work out. It may be difficult a first, but keep trying and you will not only improve your paintball game, you'll improve your health!
Also, it is mandatory for paintball players to wear special safety equipment to protect their bodies and prevent injuries. See if you can complete the following sentences that describe the safety equipment used in paintball games.
- A mask protects the entire ___________ from injury.
- Specialized goggles and lenses are designed to protect the __________.

For safety reasons, the velocity (or speed) that a marker (a paintball gun) can fire a paintball must be monitored. A small Doppler radar is used to check the speed of the marker. The paintball is fired over the machine and the radar tracks the distance it covers in a specific time. This is converted electronically to feet per second (fps) and displayed on a digital read-out. The standard speed for a marker is between 250 and 300 feet per second (fps), which is about 200 miles per hour! See if you can calculate the following questions:
- How long would it take a paint ball traveling 300 feet per second to cover a football field (100 yards)? Remember 1 yard = 3 feet.
- How far could a paintball traveling 300 feet per second go in four seconds?

You may have wondered: "How does the marker fire the paintball so fast?"
The paintballs are placed in a hopper (a holding area) on top of the gun. A player squeezes the trigger to release a blast of compressed gas. The blast of gas pushes the paintball out of the gun. The gas is stored in a tank on the back of the gun. See if you can find the answers to the following questions:
- Can you name the gas used in paint guns?
- Do you know the scientific name for carbon dioxide?
- Some paint guns use HPA or _________________.
- What do the initials HPA stand for?
- What is a paintball made of?
