Pitt-Titusville Takes the Challenge

WQLN Radio is pleased to announce a new contender in the 9th season of their popular fall fundraiser, The Collegiate Challenge. For eight years, The Collegiate Challenge has been an enormous success, helping WQLN Radio reach the budgeted funds needed to pay for programs, member fees and other operating expenses.

"Many people assume that the government provides the necessary funding for programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Car Talk," stated Amanda Hurd, Membership Fundraising Coordinator. "That just isn't the case. Eighty-eight percent of the radio station's operating budget is raised through listener donations. WQLN Radio relies on the generosity of its listeners to thrive."

The Collegiate Challenge is a unique and friendly competition between local colleges and universities on behalf of public radio. Each day of the fundraising campaign features a local college and special guests from that college, often including the president. These special guests highlight campus news and provide testimony for the importance of public radio and reasons for listeners to support.

"This is WQLN Radio's largest and most successful radio fundraiser," said Lisa Counasse, Membership and Special Events Manager at WQLN. "Each year, we look for new ways to freshen up the campaign and maintain the excitement. Last year, we did that with the addition to LECOM to the challenge. This year we were able to get Pitt-Titusville on board."

University of Pittsburgh-Titusville, often referred to as UPT or Pitt-Titusville, is one of the regional campuses of the University of Pittsburgh. Established in 1963, the campus of Pitt-Titusville occupies 10 acres in Titusville, Pennsylvania. Pitt-Titusville grants the Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science degrees in liberal arts, business management, human services, natural science, accounting, business information systems, physical therapy, and nursing. Bachelor's degrees are also awarded in business management, and human relations.

The athletics department of University of Pittsburgh-Titusville is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I. It sponsors teams in basketball, golf, and volleyball. The teams are nicknamed the Panthers. Students of Pitt-Titusville also participate in intramural sports like indoor soccer, speedball, volleyball, bowling, racquetball, dodge ball, and football.

"We're very excited to be a part of this year's Collegiate Challenge," Dr. William Shields, President of Pitt-Titusville said. "This is an exciting opportunity to partner with WQLN and one that will also allow us to showcase our academic presence within the community."

The official start of The Collegiate Challenge is Monday, October 11. However WQLN Radio encourages a pre-drive pledges to kick off the fun. Listeners can pledge online anytime before the drive to give their favorite participating school a head start in the competition as well as jump start WQLN Radio's largest goal yet for the popular fundraiser!
