DAY 1
The Very Hungry Learner
Audience: Pre-School - Elementary

Description:  Participants will examine the curriculum guidelines and the Pennsylvania State Academic Standards to determine strengths and areas for improvement within their own teaching. Participants will discover ways to incorporate inexpensive experiments within their classrooms to help teach basic concepts. Many of these experiments will be edible!

 

DAY 2
Early Literacy: Lullabies to Literacy

Audience:  Infant/Toddler

Description:  Participants will develop strategies for helping caregivers and parents nurture early literacy skills. The training focuses on the kinds of experiences that help young children develop a positive attitude about literacy. It offers insights and strategies into emergent literacy in three areas: spoken language, reading, and writing. Through video segments, hands-on activities, and group discussion, participants will explore how everyday experiences can make children want to learn to read and write.


Media Literacy: The Dangers of the Internet
Audience: Pre-School/School-age

Description: This workshop will take an in-depth look at the dangers of the Internet and explore positive strategies for educators and parents to minimize the harmful media effects.


DAY 3
Early Literacy: A-Z Learning Across the Alphabet  

Audience: Pre-school-Elementary

Description: Participants will learn about current trends in education regarding the teaching of the alphabet, phonics, phonemes, and phonemic awareness. While engaging in various hands-on experiences designed to teach the above instruction, participants will discover multitudes of resources to aid them in formulating a unit plan to be incorporated in their individual classrooms.

What Do You Do with the Mad that You Feel?

Description:  Participants will gain skills to help children learn to deal with the day-to-day emotional challenges and frustrations that they face in an appropriate manner.

Description:  This 2-hour professional development, a follow-up to the "Mad Feelings" event, takes a closer look at the children who have more serious problems with anger management. It acknowledges the strong feelings of frustration, helplessness, and even anger such behavior can engender in practitioners and teachers. By encouraging a long term approach that stresses the importance of relationships with the child, with colleagues, with parents, and with intervention specialists, practitioners can come to see the important difference they can make in the life of even the most challenging child.

 

DAY 5
Early Literacy: Encouraging Multiple Intelligences Through Children'sLiterature  

Audience: Pre-School/Elementary

Description: Participants will be actively involved in hands-on activities designed to meet the needs of learners through the use of multiple intelligences. Participants will collaborate to brainstorm with peers on ways to facilitate this learning within the classroom.  By the end of the course, participants will create an activity file to take with them.

All classes will be held in the WQLN Fatica Learning Center. The CORE classes have a registration fee of $5 (CORE SERIES: CBK/PDR, CQI, FPDP).

 

March 13, 2010 - 123 Magic Part 1 (CLASS FULL)

Description: Age Emphasis: Infants, Toddlers, Pre-K to 1
In addition to being delightful, charming and affectionate, children can also present their adult caretakers with a steady diet of difficult behavior: whining, arguing, teasing, fighting, yelling, tantrums and pouting. Parents, educators and caregivers will learn how to strengthen their relationships with the children around them. This award winning discipline program provides practical, effective and easy to use.

 

March 27, 2010 - Behavior Tools that Make a Difference

Act 48/DPW = 4hrs

Description: This workshop will give teachers new tools in their tool belts to use for children ages pre-school (3yrs) to school-age. (Tools such as "positive correction", the use of "I" Statements and the difference between right/left brain thinkers) Attendees will learn how to trigger the opposite side of the brain to reduce anger and de-escalate the child to a much calmer state. Be prepared to learn new concepts. This workshop is an interactive workshop between speaker and attendees so be prepared to participate and learn!! This is not for infant or toddlers, but for pre-school to school-age.

 

April 3, 2010 - Teachable Moments

April 17, 2010 - Using Microsoft Excel to Make Your Job Easier!

Description:  This workshop will provide tips and tricks to make MS Excel work for you.  Knowing the easy way to get the job done can turn MS Excel from a chore into a tool to make your job easier.  You've already done the work, now make it sparkle!


April 24, 2010 - Building Bridges: Creating Family Literacy Kits

Description:  Bridge the gap between home and school by learning about Family Literacy Kits. We will explore ways to incorporate these kits into any curriculum.  Participants will have the opportunity to create a Family Literacy Kit to take with them to begin their own home involvement program. (pre-school, elementary, middle school)

Description: MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE KEYSTONE STARS CORE TRAINING SERIES. This professional development opportunity will provide a child care director with the knowledge and skills required to develop a continuous quality improvement process. It will enable a director to identify various sources of information to identify areas needing improvement. Further, it will show how training and technical assistance are methods that can be used to enhance quality.

May 15, 2010 - Instructional Strategies: Internet Surfing for Technologically Challenged Educators

LIMIT: 18 learners

 

Description:  Participants will be introduced to basic computer technology, learn the basics of surfing the web, explore kid-friendly websites, learn ways to use basic word processing programs, and learn how to save items while protecting copyright laws. Participants can expect to discover dozens of free and low-cost learning resources for use within their classrooms during this workshop.
