WQLN Education's 120-hour Child Development Associate (CDA) Preparation Program

 

This program is designed for Childcare Providers who are preparing for the CDA credential.  It awards a certificate from Pennsylvania Keys and will also award 120 Act 48 hours to providers who are also certified Pennsylvania K-12 teachers.

 

Childcare Providers (DPW) - $150 registration fee (includes all textbooks and materials)


Teachers (Act 48) - $500 registration fee (includes all textbooks and materials)

 

While payment is due at the time of registration, the final date to pay will be Friday, October 15, 2010.

 

All classes will be held each Wednesday evening from 6pm-9pm in the WQLN Fatica Learning Center.

CDA Part One: Child Development

November 17 - January 19

 

CDA Part Two: Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education

January 26 - March 16

 

CDA Part Three: The Early Childhood Professional

March 23 - May 11

 

This program will award 9 undergraduate credits through Seton Hill University, if the participant chooses to enroll for those credits at an additional cost.


Undergraduate Credit through Seton Hill University will be awarded at an additional cost of $170 per credit, or $1,530 for 9 undergraduate credits, in addition to the course tuition stated above.  The 9 undergraduate credits will be earned by successfully completing each of the 3 courses within the certificate program and each project that falls within each course.  Enrollment for the undergraduate credits must be completed upon registration for the certificate program.  Fees for the undergraduate credits must be paid, or payment arrangements made prior to the start of the program.  Payment arrangements apply only to the undergraduate credit fees.


Certified Pennsylvania K-12 teachers will receive 120 Act 48 hours.

 

Because this program is funded by the Northwest Regional Key, employees of DPW Childcare Centers will be provided with a seat in the class first.  If openings in the class still remain, K-12 teachers will be placed in the class on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Registration fees are due in full at the time of registration.  Students who withdraw from the course of study within 2 weeks of the start of the program will receive an 80% refund of tuition.

WQLN's SATURDAY WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

 

Professionalism in the Early Childhood Work Environment

This workshop will cover the aspects of the job description of all staff in the Early Childhood field. Participants will be given information for those wanting to behave professionally and ethically within that work environment. The course will specifically

focus on job expectations of early childhood professionals, appropriate attitudes and behaviors, and the benefits of conducting oneself in a professional and ethical manner.

Across the Curriculum with Animal Antics

Animal Antics is a hands-on activity-based workshop where the participants will be actively engaged in activities designed to bring to life science for students. Participants will examine the state standards at their grade level to determine what skills that are to be taught in the areas of science and math and how they can incorporate them more effectively within their classroom situations. The course will demonstrate how to explore the web more effectively to find resources to use within the classroom. Finally, participants will be able to identify various local resources and ways in which they might be used within their curriculum areas.

Behavior Tools that Make a Difference

This workshop will give teachers new tools in their tool belts to use for children ages pre-school (3yrs) to school-age. (Tools such as "positive correction, the use of "I" Statements and the difference between right/left brain thinkers) Attendees will learn how to

trigger the opposite side of the brain to reduce anger and de-escalate the child to a much calmer state.  Be prepared to learn new concepts.  This workshop is an interactive workshop

between speaker and attendees so be prepared to participate and learn!!  This is not for educators who have infant or toddlers, but for educators who primarily interact with pre-school to school-age children.

Explore the value and versatility of using centers within your classroom.  Be actively engaged in sample learning center activities designed to be high interest hands-on learning

CQI/FPDP  Continuous Quality Improvement/Facility Professional Development Plan

MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE KEYSTONE STARS CORE TRAINING SERIES.  (CQI) This professional development opportunity will provide a childcare director with the knowledge and skills required to develop a continuous quality improvement (CQI) process complete with goals and objectives, which is the basic premise for the Keystone Stars Quality Rating System.  (FPDP)

This module will show how training and technical assistance are methods that can be used to enhance quality. It will assist practitioners in their development of a professional development plan for their program. Several sources of evidence will be used to practice identifying professional development needs of staff and how individual needs inform a plan for the entire facility. 

(There will be a 30 min break between sessions)

Color Me Healthy

This interactive workshop will explore the award winning "Color Me Healthy" curriculum,  as well as, supportive materials and activities.  Participants will develop an action plan for promoting good nutrition, planning healthy meals/snacks and integrating physical activity appropriate for preschool age children within their own classrooms while addressing the PA Early Learning Standards. Those completing this 3-hour training may have an opportunity to

receive a variety of classroom materials for their facility. PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING FROM A CENTER THAT HAS ALREADY RECEIVED A "COLOR ME HEALTHY" KIT WILL NEED TO BRING IT TO THIS SESSION.

Lullabies to Literacy
Participants will develop strategies for helping caregivers and parents nurture early literacy skills. The training focuses on the kinds of experiences that help young children develop a positive attitude about literacy. It offers insights and strategies into emergent literacy in three areas: spoken language, reading, and writing. Through video segments, hands-on activities, and group discussion, participants will explore how everyday experiences can make children want to learn to read and write.

Story Time and Beyond

Are you looking for new ways in which to put a little pop into your story times? No matter the age of your students, there is great value in being read to.  During this workshop, you will find ways in which to make story time the favorite time of day for both you and your students.

 

This workshop will:
*Introduce participants to the various benefits that come from oral reading.
*Introduce ways in which story time can be interactive and a stepping stone to concept

learning.
*Introduce ways in which story time can be incorporated throughout the subjects and

throughout the day to enhance student learning.
*Introduce participants to new and familiar authors, and literature series.
*Introduce participants to various techniques to keep students engaged during story time.

Classroom Management Techniques & Ways to Work with Personality Plus Kids!

Explore practical approaches on how to set up workable classroom management systems and ways to effectively implement it for the benefit of the entire class.  Participants in this workshop will explore various classroom management systems and techniques.  They will discuss a few typical behavioral issues that arise within many classroom situations, along with ways to identify and manage them, and develop an action plan for implementation.

Families in Society: Handling Stress

Participants will examine the causes of stress in infants and young children. Following the workshops, participants will better understand their role in helping young children learn to calm themselves when they are stressed. The workshop covers both the danger of too much stress in early life and the benefits of learning healthy ways to deal with stress.

Across the Curriculum with Nursery Rhymes

Explore the value of using Nursery Rhymes to teach literacy skills across the curriculum.  Be actively engaged in high interest activities designed to utilize nursery rhymes within your classroom.
This workshop will introduce participants to the skills that can be learned through the use of Nursery Rhymes within the curriculum such as phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The instructor will demonstrate various ways to incorporate math and science through the use of hands-on, minds-on instructional techniques that directly relate to various Nursery Rhymes.  Additionally, participants will be introduced to the strands of learning that can take place by examining the PA State Standards in relationship to Nursery Rhymes.
